Hegemon
Freighter
The Hegemon is the combat freighter — the most combat-capable hauler in the base game, and the standard recommendation for any player who wants to move serious cargo through space that isn't entirely safe. It carries 175 units of cargo, enough to run genuinely profitable trade routes, while mounting four turret hardpoints and a respectable 7,500 armor. That is not a VHF loadout, but it is enough to discourage routine pirate interdictions and survive the ones it can't avoid.
The four turrets cover a wide field of fire. A Hegemon pilot can engage attackers coming from multiple angles simultaneously, which matters when you're slow and heavily loaded. Two forward gun slots let you engage head-on rather than simply absorbing damage. The Class 6 weapon cap is lower than any fighter class, but paired with a decent shield it creates a ship that can fight its way out of an ambush long enough to reach a trade lane.
The Hegemon is available at multiple Liberty stations and outfitters. It is a mid-tier purchase — expensive enough that you'll want to have established a profitable trade route before buying, but far more accessible than the VHFs locked behind border world access. Traders who commit to it early get the cargo capacity to build serious wealth; traders who arrive at it from a fighter background get a platform that doesn't feel entirely helpless when interdicted.
The honest caveat: a determined combat ship will win an extended engagement against a Hegemon. The freighter's role is not to win fights; it is to survive them or discourage them from starting. Choose your routes with that in mind, and the Hegemon earns its keep.
